Laser Therapy

Helping Your Pet Heal, Recover & Feel More Comfortable

What Is Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy, also called photobiomodulation therapy, uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate the body's natural healing processes. Light energy is absorbed by cells and tissues to support healing, circulation, and recovery.

Laser therapy may help:

  • Reduce pain and inflammation
  • Improve circulation and oxygen delivery
  • Promote tissue repair and wound healing
  • Relax muscles
  • Encourage natural endorphin release
  • Support faster healing and recovery

Laser therapy is drug-free, non-invasive, and can often be used alongside your pet's existing medications and treatments. It may be especially helpful for pets with limited medication options, including those with underlying liver or kidney disease, pets that are difficult to medicate, or pets that cannot tolerate certain pain medications.

What Can My Pet Expect?

A veterinarian or trained assistant gently moves a handheld laser over the affected area. Hair typically does not need to be clipped or shaved. Both your pet and the individual performing the treatment will wear protective eye protection. Most pets experience a warm, soothing sensation and remain relaxed throughout treatment. Sedation or significant restraint is usually not required.

Treatment time: Approximately 15–30 minutes, depending on the area being treated and the therapy needed.

How Often Will My Pet Need Treatment?

Treatment frequency depends on your pet's condition:

  • Wounds & surgical incisions: Often treated daily for a shorter period
  • Chronic conditions: May be treated less frequently over a longer period
  • Chronic or severe conditions: Some pets may require 4–6 treatments before noticeable improvement

Your veterinarian will create an individualized treatment plan for your pet.

When Is Laser Therapy Not Recommended?

Laser therapy should not be used over:

  • A pregnant uterus, eyes, or an open fontanelle
  • Malignant or cancerous masses or surgical site following removal of a possibly cancerous mass

Pets with superficial metal implants may still be candidates for laser therapy. Your veterinary team will adjust the treatment technique as needed.

Is Laser Therapy Right for Your Pet?

Laser therapy can be a valuable addition to your pet's pain management, healing, and rehabilitation plan. Your veterinarian will determine whether it is appropriate for your pet and recommend the best treatment schedule.

Ask our veterinary team if laser therapy could help your pet heal, recover, and feel more comfortable!
